Cedarville Channel is open, the robins are back, and blooming crocuses have been seen. Many agree that this must be the earliest opening in memory. I remember one year, however, when Con and I were called home from Florida by our children in mid-March, telling us that the ice was beginning to break up. We had cottages at that time and had to prepare them for the busy spring perch run. April 15 was usually the approximate date for the spring break-up.

How exciting that the boys basketball team won the regional in Pellston last week. Now they go on to the quarterfinals in Escanaba and we’re all rooting for them. This is Coach David Duncan’s fifth consecutive winning team.

Joe Baker was one of the referees at the Class D Girls State Finals basketball game Saturday, March 20, at Michigan State University.

The Islander Bar had its third annual fish fry Saturday, March 20. More than 175 dinners were sold. All proceeds from the dinner and a 50/50 raffle were given to the Trojans Booster Club. More than $2,000 was raised. The Booster Club also gave away hats, T-shirts, and bags.

Many local residents attended the soup luncheon Tuesday, March 16, at First Union Church. Among them (pictured) were Laurence and Pat Lofdahl, Beth and Bob Christian, and Sue Maki. Women who wish to attend the next Cabin Fever Day may wish to know that Bethel Lutheran Church will host this event Thursday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The church will provide coffee, a cold beverage, dessert, and table service. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass for the noon meal and a project of their choice to work on, or just come to visit. Everyone is welcome.
