Edward Charles “Bud” Dowd, 73, of Sunnyvale, California, enjoyed a 41-year career with United Airlines, working in Detroit and San Francisco. Mr. Dowd passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at his residence, the Care Home in Sunnyvale.
He was born September 27, 1936, in Fibre to Frederick and Gertrude (nee Dalman) Dowd.
Mr. Dowd attended Rudyard High School, where he excelled in all sports. After high school graduation in 1954, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving until his discharge in 1956.
He married Darlene Salo June 21, 1958.
When he returned home, he went to work for United Airlines in Detroit. He worked full-time at Detroit Metro Airport, going to school at night, while the couple’s two young children were growing up. Mr. Dowd earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business management, initially from Eastern Michigan University and then through Golden Gate University in California, when United Airlines transfered him to San Francisco. He continued to work for United Airlines in California in midmanagement until his retirement in 1997.
Mr. Dowd is survived by his wife; a son and his family, Dean and Trish Dowd; a daughter and her family, Jill and Rob Carte, and three grandchildren, Kaila Dowd and Brittany and Katie Carte. He also is survived by four sisters and their families, Doris McDowell, Joyce Chadwick, Marjorie Langendam, and Beth and Herb Spring; two brothers-in-law and their families, Raymond Salo and Gary and Mary Ann Salo, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lora Malaska Salo and Helen Loveless; five brothers-inlaw, Clayton Loveless, John Langendam, Bill Chadwick, Leonard McDowell, and Vern Malaska, and his wife’s parents, Toivo and Lempi Salo.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Interment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.
