Elmblad, Mortensen Named Top Hoops Players in SAC
LaSalle High School junior Nicole Elmblad and senior Gerrit Mortensen were selected Players of the Year by the coaches in the Straits Area Conference (SAC) Wednesday, March 17.
Elmblad led the Saints to a Class C runner-up spot in the state tournament and an SAC championship while averaging 25.1 points per game, 11.5 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 5.7 steals, and blocked 21 shots.
Mortensen averaged 30.4 points per game, tied a school record with a single game of 45 points, and recorded 7.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.
Girls Squad
Selected to the first team were senior Samantha Radecki and junior Grace Wheeler of St. Ignace, senior Emily Jeffreys of Rudyard, senior Katie Fitzpatrick and junior Nikki Beaumont of Sault Ste. Marie, and senior Caryn Ducsay of Newberry.
Second team honors went to senior Kristen Olsen of St. Ignace, freshman Leah Jarvie of Rudyard, junior Alex Perry of Sault Ste. Marie, senior Amy Charboneau of Cheboygan, senior Greta Grambeau of Rogers City, and senior Rachel Marsh of Newberry.
Honorable mention went to senior Mallory LaLonde of St. Ignace, junior Selena Messer of Sault Ste. Marie, and senior Logan Schuiteman of Rogers City.
Boys Squad
First team honors went to junior Austin St. Louis of St. Ignace, seniors Arik Hesselink and Drew Otten of Rudyard, and seniors Trevor Closs and Jordan Spohn of Cheboygan.
Named to the second team were seniors Scott Coffey and Davin Salo of Rudyard, Nick Hancock of Cheboygan, Dave Deuman of Sault Ste. Marie, and Erik Meharg of Rogers City.
Receiving honorable mention were senior Evan Everson of St. Ignace, junior Ryan Hendrickson of Rudyard, sophomore Steve Angeli of Sault Ste. Marie, Kollin Currie of Cheboygan, senior Evan Warner of Rogers City, and senior John Schummer of Newberry.
