Gerrit Mortensen Named Class A-B-C Player of the Year
Senior Gerrit Mortensen, the Class A-B-C Player of the Year, with Saints Coach Jason Marshall.
Senior Gerrit Mortensen, the top scorer in the Upper Peninsula this season with a 30.4 average, became just the second player from LaSalle High School to be selected as the Class A-B-C Player of the Year since its inception in 1985. He was selected during voting by U.P. sportswriters and sportscasters at their annual meeting at the Don Bottoms University Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette Tuesday, March 30. Eastern Upper Peninsula athletes, teams, and coaches received top honors in many categories.
LaSalle’s Steve MacDonald was the first player from the school named as the top player in Class AB C following the 2000-2001 season.
Mortensen and Kyle Aho of Gwinn both received All-State honors by the Associated Press and were the two top players, as the Saints standout received 16 votes and the Modeltowners player four votes.
Austin St. Louis
Joining Mortensen and Aho on the All-Class Dream Team were seniors Arik Hesselink of Rudyard, McKinley Portice of Pickford, and Brad Ives of Bark River- Harris.
Junior Austin St. Louis of St. Ignace was named to the Class AB C second team.
All-Star Selection The seniors who were named to the All-Class Dream Team, First Team, and Second Team automatically qualify for the Upper Peninsula All-Star game that will be held at Norway High School Saturday, June 19.
Voting Procedure
Twenty members of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters voted for the top players, coaches, and teams during the annual meeting in Marquette Tuesday, March 30.
Twelve sportswriters, seven sportscasters, and one television producer present the statistics for individual players, coaches, and teams and voting takes place by show of hands.
