EAB Detected at Sault Ste. Marie
An infestation of Emerald Ash Borers, insects that damage and kill ash trees, has been found at the Lake Superior State University campus in Sault Ste. Marie, it was announced March 16. This marks the second detection in that area since an infestation was discovered near Brimley in September. The infestation was found after ash borer signs, such as woodpecker damage, were noted.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and university staff are working together to determine the size of the infestation. A survey will be conducted around the surrounding areas, and will involve cutting down approximately 20 to 30 trees, said Michigan Department of Agriculture Pesticide and Plant Management Division Manager John Bedford. Property owners will be asked permission before trees are taken down on private property.
About 100 purple traps will be placed in ash trees in the area in early June and will remain there until August.
