Hospital Opens, Shares Plans

On Drawing Board: Long Term Care Unit This Fall, Surgery Suite Next Spring, CEO Says

Less than 24 hours before the doors open at the new St. Ignace hospital, the covering is removed from the sign on North State Street Thursday, April 15. The process took Sam Lahti, a sign specialist with Cook Sign Services of Marquette, about an hour. The time is far less than it took to install the covering, when two men worked on it for two days last fall. The sign has been covered to avoid any confusion of when services would be available at the facility. With strong fall and winter winds typical in the Straits area, the covering included a double tarp layer made to lie away from the sign. “I've worked in St. Ignace before and I know what the winds can do,” said Mr. Lahti, who has 20 years of experience in the sign business. The emergency room portion of the sign was not uncovered until the hospital opened Friday, April 16.
