Brevort Twp. Mill Is a Good Deal
Thank you for your excellent coverage of Brevort Township board meetings. Your reporters always take the time to get their facts straight, and that’s appreciated.
I have lived in Brevort Township all of my life, except for my World War II military service. I’ve served on the township board for many years as trustee and also as treasurer. I’ve seen good deals come the township’s way over the years, and I’ve seen some bad deals. The new community center/library proposal is the best deal I’ve seen, and I hope that voters will approve the project at the May 4 election.
The township is receiving a $105,000 grant toward the new community center and library. That is a gift, money that we do not have to repay. For the balance of the construction cost, we have secured a very lowinterest loan.
The board has determined that we can build the new community center and library without raising taxes if we split the current one mill that covers community center/library expenses into two proposals: One-half mill for maintenance and one-half mill for construction of the new center. One-half and one-half still equals just one.
This approach creates no additional taxation, just one mill that has been split in half to meet two needs. We’re just stretching our dollars to accomplish more without raising taxes.
