LaTour, Marshall Named LaSalle’s Students of the Month

Katie LaTour and Kali Marshall have been selected as March Students of the Month at LaSalle High School.
Katie LaTour
Miss LaTour is a senior. She has a 3.63 grade point average, based on a 4-point scale. Throughout high school, she has taken a college preparatory curriculum. Her academic schedule includes senior English, advanced physical education, economics, modern history, advanced mathematics, and advanced biology. She is a mentor for an elementary student. Her favorite classes are science and mathematics.
“All of my teachers have inspired me in their own specific way,” she said. “I appreciate everything my teachers have taught me this year, especially Ms. [Kathy] Schacht, Ms. [Onalee] Gibson, and Mr. [Kip] Wiersma.
Miss LaTour moved this past summer to St. Ignace with her family. In her previous school in Illinois, as well as here in St. Ignace, she has been active in extracurricular activities. She plays volleyball and basketball and was a member of this year’s Saints basketball team that was Class C State Runner Up. She has been a member of the Book Club and the Spanish Club.
Kali Marshall
Her teachers cite maturity and leadership as two of her key strengths. She was selected to be a member of the National Honor Society. She has been involved in several community service projects, including washing windows, Red Cross blood drive, and working at the hospital.
Academic achievements include the 9th-11th grade All Academic award, 12th grade Principal’s Award, and honor roll status throughout high school. She has been selected as a Straits Area Conference Scholar Athlete.
She enjoys reading, writing, and playing sports. She likes to run on the beach. She enjoys working out, dancing, and spending time with her friends.
“Moving to a new community in your senior year is a difficult thing to do, but everybody in the St. Ignace community has been so welcoming,” Miss LaTour said. “The impact on my life has been ... tremendously for the positive and I would not want to go back or change my senior year for anything.”
Miss LaTour’s plan for next year is to attend Central Michigan University, where she will major in atmospheric science and meteorology. She plans to pursue a career as a meteorologist.
She has a sister, Jenna. Her parents are Jimmy LaTour and Donna Dynda.
Kali Marshall
Miss Marshall is a senior. She has a 3.42 grade point average based on a 4-point scale. Throughout high school, she has taken a college preparatory curriculum. Her academic schedule includes senior English, weight training, anatomy and physiology, senior modern history, and band. She is a mentor for an elementary student, and she has work experience in the hospital’s physical therapy program. Her favorite class is anatomy and physiology.
“Every teacher I had was influential to me, each in a different way,” she said.
Miss Marshall is active in athletics, where she is a standout player in both volleyball and track. She is a member of the drama club, as well as the student council.
From a leadership perspective, teachers note, Miss Marshall’s maturity is respected by her classmates and teachers. She was selected by the girls volleyball team to be the captain of the team. She was selected by the student body to represent them as this year’s student council president.
Achievements in the classroom include continuous honor roll status and nomination to the Just Desserts banquet every year in high school. In the athletic realm, she was selected last year as the Most Valuable Player in volleyball, and the Most Valuable Player on the girls track team. Last year at the MHSAA State Track Finals, she took the first place medal in the pole vault, earning her All State honors in track.
In the summer months, she works at one of the local motels. When not in school, she enjoys four-wheeling and likes to go to the beach.
Her goal next year is to attend Grand Valley State University, where she plans to pursue a career in physical therapy.
She has two brothers, Derek and Brandon. Her parents are Randy and Cassie Marshall.
