Frances Gillmore
Frances Gillmore, 91, of St. Ignace, was a musician who played guitar and bass violin. Mrs. Gillmore died peacefully Friday evening, May 7, 2010, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care.
She was born October 31, 1918, in Pocetella, Idaho, to Howard and Marriam (nee Morse) Spung. She lived in southern Ohio during her childhood. An area in Perry County, known as Spung Hollow, is named after her father.
Mrs. Gillmore was graduated from Genoa High School, near Toledo, Ohio, and immediately went on the road as a professional musician, playing guitar and bass violin. Traveling extensively as a professional musician, she met her husband, Ted, a well known musician and artist. They were married in New Lexington, Ohio, in 1944.
They moved to St. Ignace in 1945. She was known for her music in the area, playing for many events in St. Ignace, Mackinac Island, and Mackinaw City.
She worked for several places in St. Ignace, and was a clerk for the St. Ignace Police Department at one time. She volunteered at Touch of Craft. She was a longtime member of the St. Ignace United Methodist Church, playing music extensively, and also taught Sunday School. She was a member of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her son and his family, Ken and Jane Gillmore of St. Ignace; two grandsons and their families, Ken Jr. and Angie of St. Ignace, and Brad of Marquette; and a great-grandson, Waylon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1974; a stepson, Howard Gillmore; and two siblings, Richard Spung and Mary Avery.
Services will be Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jim Balfour officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services. A luncheon will follow the services. Burial will be in Gros Cap Cemetery beside her husband.
