Rudyard

By Kerry Fountain

Margaret LaPonsie is organizing the annual Rudyard Area Community Foundation Golf Scramble. The foundation offers scholarships to local seniors and grants to the schools. There are two new scholarships this year for graduating seniors, the Barbara J. Irwin Memorial Scholarship and the Sergeant Christopher Griffin Scholarship. Students had to write a two-page essay on what duty, honor, and country means to them to receive the Griffin Scholarship. Barbara Irwin was a home economics teacher at Rudyard Area Schools for many years. Donations are accepted from anyone for these scholarships.

They’re also looking for sponsors for the golf outing. To sponsor a hole or sign up for the golf outing, call Margaret at 478-5591. The scramble will take place Friday, June 18, at 4:30 p.m. at the Oaks Golf Course in Kincheloe. Entry fee is $25 per person.

A free class in off-road vehicle safety is planned at the Kinross Recreation Center Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students are asked to bring a sack lunch and to pre-register by calling the center at 495-5350.

Students in third grade at Turner Howson Elementary School in Rudyard participated in a threeweek multiplication tournament. At the end of three weeks, the top 10 third graders competed. They include: Haley VanSloten, Myles Pope, Emilee Curtis, Daniel Henderson, Samantha Murray, Dylan Mills, Trenton McDowell, James Fox, Trevor Miller, and Sydnie Zeeryp. The top three students were as follows: Myles Pope, first place; Haley VanSloten, second place, and Samantha Murray, third place.

The Turner-Howson spring concert will be Monday, May 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the school.
