St. Ignace Recreation Board Hears Special Events Report
The St. Ignace Recreation Advisory Committee heard an update on recent special events by Recreation Director Scott Marshall Wednesday, May 12.
The inaugural Indoor Red Hacker Basketball Tournament at Little Bear East Arena Saturday, May 8, drew 51 teams and 210 players, he reported. The recreation department lost $83 to run the tournament, which cost $3,500 to host.
In spite of the shortfall, however, Mr. Marshall said hotels and restaurants in the community told him they were pleased with the exposure they had from participants over the weekend. He added that while not many local teams participated, he expects a better turnout next year.
“We think this is something that will continue to grow,” he said. “I think we'll see a lot more local teams in the years to come.”
The St. Ignace Home Show on the weekend of April 16 and 17 drew more than 800 people to the arena, Mr. Marshall reported, turning in a profit of approximately $1,500. While he was pleased with the number of vendors that participated, he said fewer people attended the event than what the department anticipated.
“We were hoping to see more people this year,” he said. “Businesses want a good number of people, [and] there wasn't enough walk-through traffic.”
The St. Ignace Swimming Pool will be open to the public Monday, June 7. Hours will be Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. The pool will be closed on Saturdays this year owing to lack of demand in the past, he said.
The recreation committee will be appointing a sub-committee to update its future recreation plan, Committee Chairman Don Gustafson reported. Members of the group will be selected at the committee's meeting Wednesday, June 9.
