William Murphy
William C. Murphy, 80, of Brevort Lake Road in Moran, was a U.S. Navy veteran and later a business owner who worked as a machinist, shrimper, and trucker. Mr. Murphy died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at his home.
He was born May 2, 1930, in Otsego, to Gibson and Margaret (nee Hazen) Murphy.
Mr. Murphy was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in peacetime after World War II.
He was a journeyman machinist, who had a machine shop near Martin for several years. He retired in 1992, but still ran his machine shop at his home.
Mr. Murphy also owned a marina in Fort Myers, Florida, and at one time owned four shrimp boats, operating them in Florida for 10 years. He was a long-distance trucker for several years.
He married Esther Smith November 7, 1951, in Otsego.
He and his wife moved to Brevort Lake Road and had a store on West US-2, Murphy’s Grocery, for five years.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Esther; a daughter and her family, Kathleen Kay and Paul Hawley of Fort Myers; a stepbrother and his family, James and Diane Murphy of Vicksburg; a stepsister and her family, Jacqualine and Albert Walthuis of Mattawan, and one grandson, Kelly Shea Woodhouse.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bonnie Marie Woodhouse.
Services were Tuesday, May 18, at Glen Memorial Baptist Church in St. Ignace with Pastor Mike Lane and Pastor Wayne Foote officiating. Burial will be in Brevort Township Cemetery at a later date.
Dodson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
