Gabriel Honored by Coast Guard
Alexander Gabriel Petty Officer Third Class Alexander Gabriel was named Sailor of the Month for April for United States Coast Guard Station St. Ignace.
Petty Officer Gabriel is a machinery technician at Station St. Ignace. He was the lead engineer and the only Boarding Officer for the port duty section. During this time, he assisted junior members with their boat crewman qualifications and also assisted junior engineers with learning the stations Preventive Maintenance Program and daily routine. His engineering duty section maintained its productivity even though it was short two engineers.
In preparing a vessel to make its annual trip to St. Ignace from Sault Ste Marie where it had spent its winter lay-up, he found a broken oil line that, if it had gone unnoticed, could have led to a possible fire in the engine room or the boat being otherwise taken out of service. His attention to detail allowed repairs to be made prior to the boat being placed in the water. Petty Officer Gabriel has been in the Coast Guard for two years. After graduating from basic training in Cape May, New Jersey, he went to school for four months to become a machinery technician. After completing his training, he was assigned to Station St. Ignace. He maintains all the boat engines and systems in addition to all other equipment.
He enjoys fishing, hunting, camping, sports, and fixing whatever he can get his hands on.
