Nicole Elmblad and Gerrit Mortensen received the Stanley St. Louis Memorial Athlete of the Year honors. The senior class at LaSalle High School (LHS) dominated the annual athletic honors presented during the awards ceremony Monday, May 24. Eighteen students received honors, including 14 seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores.

St. Ignace, for the first time, posted the top Upper Peninsula athletes in three sports. Senior Gerrit Mortensen and junior Nicole Elmblad, the top basketball players in Class A-B-C, received the Stanley St. Louis Memorial Athlete of the Year award and John Evashevski, the first Outstanding Wrestler Award in the Upper Peninsula from LaSalle, received the Curly Nelson Memorial Citizenship Award.

"Unbelievable is the word to describe the trio of Gerrit, Nicole, and John," said Doug Ingalls who coached Mortensen and Elmblad. “All three are great athletes and strong academic students in the classroom."

Principal Don Gustafson presented the Jim Brown Sr. Memorial Scholar/Athlete Award to Kristen Olsen and Evan Everson. Seniors Kristen Olsen and Evan Everson received the Jim Brown, Sr. Memorial Scholar/Athlete Award.

Ryan Nelson presented the Citizenship Award in memory of his grandfather to seniors Samantha Radecki, Christi Therrian, and John Evashevski.

The Army Service Award went to seniors Mallory LaLonde and Kevin Guillard and the Marine Award was presented to Chelsea Swope and Dan St. Onge.

David Frazier Memorial Workhorse Award was presented to seniors Kali Jo Marshall, Kristen Olsen, and junior Austin St. Louis.

Marvel Anderson Memorial Cheerleading Award was presented to seniors Katie Garries and Kara Fitzpatrick by retired coach Janet Warren.

The St. Ignace News Rookie of the Year was awarded to freshmen Sarah Cullip and Joe Ostman.
