Effort Aims To Reduce Impaired Boating
Marine law enforcement officers will be out in force Friday, June 25, through Sunday June 27, during Operation Dry Water 2010 to reduce alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities on the water.
“Boating under the influence is a serious problem that contributes to nearly one in five recreational boating fatalities,” said Colonel Terry West, president of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and national spokesperson for Operation Dry Water. “Boaters found to be impaired can expect severe penalties that may include fines, jail time, loss of boating privileges, even loss of driving privileges.”
Alcohol can impair a boater's judgment, balance, vision, reaction time, and can increase fatigue and susceptibility to the effects of coldwater immersion. Sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion also intensify the side effects of alcohol, drugs, and some prescription medications. Boating under the influence is the leading factor in fatal boating accidents, with 17% of boating fatalities a result of alcohol or drug use, according to the United States Coast Guard.
