Music in Mackinaw Schedule Announced

Choral music and jazzy beats will echo from Conkling Heritage Park in Mackinaw City on Saturday evenings beginning June 19 at 8 p.m. In a “Music in Mackinaw” series continuing through September 4, 13 performances ranging from folk music to pre-1865 compositions are planned for the season. The Straits Area Concert Band will also perform Tuesdays, beginning July 13 at 8 p.m.

The schedule for Saturday performances follows (with occasional Friday and Sunday performances as noted): Song of the Lakes, a group that incorporates genres including Celtic, Scandinavian, and acoustic rock, will play June 19. The Banjo Picker and Friends will follow June 26 with old folk music, bluegrass, county, and other tunes. The New Reformation Jazz Band will perform July 3, playing classic jazz such as blues and Dixieland. On July 10, the Oktoben German Band will perform ethnic folk songs, marches, and polka. The Huron Shores Chorus will perform July 17 with their barbershop chorus. Exclamation!, a percussion group from the Flint Institute of Performing Arts, will play July 24, and the Air National Guard Band of the Northwest will follow a day later Sunday, July 25. The St. Ignace Saints of Steel Band, composed of 15 high school students from LaSalle High School and 12 adults from the St. Ignace community, will cap off July with their performance July 31. Friday, August 6, Dance North will perform and August 7 “Suzanne and Jim” will sing and entertain their audience with singing and clawhammer-style banjo picking. The Grand Traverse Chorus of Sweet Adelines singers will entertain visitors with education and performances of barbershop harmony August 21. The Northern Michigan Brass Band will wrap up Music in Mackinaw September 4.
