EUP Players Shine at U.P. All-Star Classic; North Girls Win, Boys Defeated

The girls and boys representing the Eastern Upper Peninsula performed well during the Upper Peninsula All-Star Basketball Classic as the North girls defeated the South, 89-77, but the North boys fell to the South, 103-95, during a shootout at Norway High School Saturday, June 19.
In the girl’s matchup, Emily Jeffreys of Rudyard scored 14 points, Jillian Collins of Cedarville added eight, and Jenna Ledy chipped in six for St. Ignace coaches Dorene and Doug Ingalls. Taylor Kaurala of Houghton led the North squad with 23 and was named Most Valuable Player. The North held a 41-40-halftime edge before outscoring the South 48-37 in the second half to post the win.

During the boys contest, McKinley Portice scored 26 points to lead the North while Gerrit Mortensen of St. Ignace and Arik Hesselink notched 17, Andrew Jaroche of Cedarville chipped in 11, and Drew Otten of Rudyard added three. Quinn Wakefield of Escanaba scored 17 and was named Most Valuable Player. The North led 52-46 at halftime before the South held a 57-43 advantage in the second half to record the eight point win.
Gerrit Mortensen won the three point shootout and Arik Hesselink captured the slam-dunk contest.
In a two-year commitment, the 2011 all-star game will return to Norway High School.
