Tribe Announces Election Results

Incumbent Keith Massaway was re-elected to represent Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians members from the St. Ignace area (Unit 3) on the tribe's board of directors, topping challenger Doug Goudreau, 752 votes to 680. Election results were announced by the tribe Friday, June 25.

In Unit 2, Catherine Hollowell earned 485 votes, taking a seat on the board and beating James Kelley, with 417 votes.

In Unit 1, Diedrie Malloy earned 1,564 votes and Debra Ann Pine had 1,547 votes and both will be seated. Other candidates were incumbents DJ Hoffman and Dennis McKelvie.

Denise Chase, Unit 4 incumbent, ran unopposed and is re-elected.

Joan Carr-Anderson garnered 262 votes and will be seated as the Unit 5 representative, beating incumbent Shirley Petosky, who earned 236 votes.

For this election, 12,364 ballots were mailed to voters, with 5,814 of voters returning their ballots. Reported election results are unofficial until certified.

The tribe’s seven-county service area is divided into five election units encompassing Mackinac, Chippewa, Luce, Delta, Alger, Schoolcraft, and Marquette counties.

The term of all representatives to the tribe's governing board is four years. Elections for remaining representatives from Unit 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as the tribal chairperson, will be held in 2012.
