Independence Day Parade To Draw Many to Curtis
“It's a Grand Old Flag” will be this year's theme for the Biggest Little Town Parade in Curtis, the traditional Independence Day celebration that brings thousands of visitors to the small town on the shores of Manistique Lake. This year's parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. and feature many marching bands, floats, and community groups portraying the American flag theme, said organizer “Captain” Bill Kelly. The parade line up is at 11 a.m. on Sandtown Road. Plaques will be awarded to winning floats or marching units designed to the theme.
The day begins with an art show. A diverse collection of handmade arts and crafts will kick off the beginning of the 36th Independence Day Celebration Sunday, July 4, at Curtis. At 10 a.m. more than 40 arts and crafts booths will be available at Curtis Park.
The Lions Club will sell barbecued chicken meals at 11 a.m. near the park.
Following the parades a line up of bands will play in the park, including the Gratitude Steel Drum Band, Sault Ste. Marie Bag Pipe Band, Royal Canadian Legion Brass Band, and Newberry High School Band.
Children's games, an inflatable slide, and rock climbing will be available in the park all afternoon, along with refreshment and food tents. The Curtis Women's Club will have a bake sale table.
A fireworks show over the lake at dusk will close out the Curtis Fourth of July celebration.
