Mackinaw City Celebrates July 4th With Games, Fireworks
People in Mackinaw City will celebrate Independence Day with a host of games, food, and attractions Sunday, July 4. Beginning at 1:30 p.m., games will be conducted on the Municipal Marina lawn on North Huron Avenue, with each game lasting about 30 minutes.
The afternoon will open with a penny scramble for children's age divisions. Five hundred pennies will be scattered throughout a pile of hay for each group, and children are given a limited amount of time to rush in and grab as many pennies as they can.
The popular egg toss game returns to the festivities, with participants finding partners to carefully throw brittle eggs to each other. The distance between the pairs becomes larger with each successful catch. When one of the partners gets splattered with yolk, the pair is eliminated.
Other games include a disc toss, a three-legged race, a basketball shooting contest, and a golf contest.
Trophies will be awarded in each age group for the disc toss, egg toss, and three-legged race. Participants can win a free soda pop from the golf game, and a token that can be redeemed for food at Dairy Queen from the basketball shooting contest.
Starting at 1 p.m. the Mackinaw City Woman's Club will host its annual strawberry social at the marina lawn. A bowl of strawberries, biscuits, and ice cream will be $4. Money raised will benefit the Mackinaw City Woman's Club.
The Mackinaw City American Legion Post will host a hot dog roast on its lawn at 4 p.m.
In the evening, the Straits Area Concert Band will play patriotic music and marches at 9 p.m. at Conkling Heritage Park off South Huron Avenue. The night will end with a large fireworks display over the waterfront at dusk, around 10 p.m.
