(Photograph by Nick Meir) Did you know that exterior and location footage for a movie was shot last year in DeTour Village? Rich Brauer’s new film, “Fitful,” starring Renee O’Connor, best known as Gabrielle from the cult classic television series, “Xena: Warrior Princess,” and Larry Joe Campbell, a Michigan native who starred as Andy in the television series, “According to Jim,” includes footage shot on the Arthur K. Atkinson, moored at the Interlake’s Steamship Dock just north of town, and from the deck of the Shorty II, Brian McAdams’ sport fishing boat. Mr. Brauer, Michigan “Filmmaker of the Year,” whose production company is based in Traverse City, is bringing a special screening of the film to DeTour’s EUP Fine Arts Council’s Cultural Center Tuesday, July 27, at 7 p.m. There is no charge for the screening, but donations to the EUP Fine Arts Council’s Building Restoration Fund will be accepted. It should be noted that the film is a “dark, suspenseful thriller” and has not yet been rated. It is not recommended for young children.

The weather looked threatening for a while Saturday, July 17, but the day turned out beautifully for one of the best DeTour Botanical Garden Home and Garden Walks ever. There will be more information in next week’s column once all the door prize winners have been notified.

The DeTour Homemakers will host a bingo game at the Village Hall Thursday, July 22. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and games start at 5:30 p.m. There will be a special prize drawing for those who bring a canned good for the food pantry. The bingos are always a fun event for both regular and occasional bingo players, and the prizes are great.

We can help complete the siding on the Cultural Center by attending the EUP Fine Arts Council silent auction and dance Saturday, July 24, at the Cultural Center. Sacred Heart Church will begin the evening with a chicken barbecue prior to the auction. The barbecue will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the auction will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the dance with DJ Kevin Barrett to follow.

The summer library program for kids, “Make a Splash - Read,” continues Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. until Tuesday, August 10. Last week the children enjoyed reading with and to Katie Lynn, the therapy dog, and visiting with her owners, Nick and Julia Meir. If you have children preschool through third grade visiting, bring them to the library for the weekly story hours. Attendance on an occasional basis is welcome.

The DeTour Friends of the Library Wednesday night Authors Series continues Wednesday, July 28, with a presentation on carnivorous plants by advanced master gardener Norma Andree. Many people may not be aware that there are four types of these plants within a 25-mile radius of town. The talk begins at 6:30 p.m. at the library, with refreshments following. Norma says she would be willing, if there is enough interest, to lead a group to look at some of these plants at a later date.

DeTour Village has a new nonprofit business. Diane Stocking has opened a thrift shop, Mary’s Attic, at 103 Erie Street. The shop will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., selling gently used clothing for all ages, household wares, and some smaller pieces of furniture. Proceeds from the shop will be used to support the outreach programs of the Wilderness Tabernacle Church of DeTour, such as the missionary programs of the Rials in Belgium and the Picketts in Iraq and also the local Crossroads youth group. If the proceeds are sufficient, donations will also be made to the missionary in Appalachia and the CareNet Pregnancy Center in Sault Ste Marie. Mary’s Attic needs part-time volunteer workers and donations of items to sell. If you can help in any way, call Diane at (906) 322-7660 or stop by the shop.
