All-American Games Set for Rudyard Summerfest

The emphasis of Rudyard's Summerfest this weekend will be on all-American games and activities, including baseball, basketball, volleyball, tractor pulls, and foot races. The twin themes of the main parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, will hearken back to America's wild west days, while also looking to the future., held Friday, July 23, to Sunday, July 25,

Events Friday, July 23, will begin with a two-day softball tournament starting at 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required. A home run derby at noon Saturday will round out the baseball-themed activities.

At 5 p.m. Friday, children and their pets will dress in costumes inspired by their favorite holiday and participate in the children's parade. The procession will start at the parking lot of Love's Meats and end at Shute Oil on Williams Street. An outhouse race takes place at 6 p.m. at the corner by the bank. Rules are available at Pure Country restaurant.

Participants can also qualify for Saturday's horseshoe tournament. Qualifying will be held at 9 a.m. and the tournament begins at noon, with a doubles tournament at the same time Sunday.

Basketball fans will be treated to three days of 3-on-3 tournaments. The elementary school tournament will be at 6 p.m. Friday, the middle school contest is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and the tournaments are concluded on Sunday with the high school and adult division at 12:30 p.m. The charge to compete is $5 per player.

There will also be a free throw competition at 2 p.m.

The Rudyard Fire Department is sponsoring a youth dance at the pavilion at 8 p.m., with music by Generic DJ. There is a $3 charge. Adults will dance a day later, also at the pavilion, starting at 9 p.m. Monkey's Uncle will perform classic and easy rock. The charge for this event is $5.

Children's games and adult games will be an hour apart on Saturday, at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., at the east side of the pavilion. These games include three-legged and sack races.

Additional games and tournaments include a tennis tournament and tractor pulls at noon Saturday, a car show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a volleyball tournament at 2:30 p.m. (for a $20 team fee), a triathlon and 5k race at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, and BMX races and disc golf at 1:15 and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Rudyard Historical Society plans an open house for Saturday, noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m.
