Chari Fischer of Trout Lake was the $100 winner and Shelley McGowan of Trout Lake was the $25 winner of last week’s Lions Club drawing.

On a sadder note, one of our residents, Sharon Thompson, passed away recently and Mary Cotton came from Lansing for the service Friday, July 16. Never, in her life, has she seen such a tribute to anyone, she said, noting all traffic between Pickford and Rudyard stopped. A farmer cutting hay even stopped, and waited for the procession to pass. People stopped pumping gas and walked to the roadside and stood, respectfully. People coming out of the credit union and post office also stopped. Folks were on their porches and in their yards, waiting and watching. Men removed their hats. What a tribute to one of your citizens. She will certainly be missed by many people in our community.

Friday, August 13, the Rudyard Historical Society will have a speaker tell about the wooden bowl factory near Brimley. Members also hope to share information about the Rudyard brick factory, toy factory, and bottling works. Let us know any details you know about those early industries. In the coming months, Bob Ploegstra will talk about the Ploegstra family Thursday, September 9; Gene Harrison will talk about his woodcarving hobby Thursday, October 14, and Mike Besteman will talk about the geology of the Rudyard area Thursday, November 11.

It was a wonderful weekend for Rudyard Summerfest. The days were nice, with only a few sprinkles here and there, and everyone seemed to go away with some prize. The youth games were exciting to watch as all the youngsters received a prize when they tossed, threw, or scored in the baskets.

Saturday, July 24, EUP Antique Equipment Association, established in 1989, put on a peddle pull for children age two to seven at the Rudyard Summer Fest. There were 49 participants, who all received trophies. A garden tractor pull and antique/classic pull followed. Results are listed here.
