Pickford Historical Society Plans Fundraisers
A golf scramble Wednesday, August 4, and a quilt raffle in August will help the Pickford Area Historical Society reduce the amount of the loan on its building on Main Street in Pickford, so that it may focus on other needs there, such as maintenance and lighting.
The Historical Society is sponsoring a four-person golf scramble August 4 at the Munuscong Golf Course, beginning at 1 p.m. The cost is $60 a person, which includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, a light barbecue, cash prizes, and giveaways.
For planning purposes, participants in the golf scramble are asked send their reservations, along with $60, to PAHS, P.O. Box 572, Pickford, MI 49774. For questions, call 647-9633 or theMunuscong Golf Club at 647-9812.
Through the work of volunteers, the museum is featuring a lumbering exhibit and a 4-H exhibit, as well as the school materials collection. The Nazarene Church in Pickford has a display of items relating to the history of their church, including a 48-star flag that once belonged to the Blairville school and was found in the building when it was moved to Sault Ste. Marie and converted to a Nazarene Church there.
Another group of volunteers worked on gathering memories from students and teachers who formerly attended area one-room schools and the schools in Pickford, as well as the history of the schools in the area. This information has been compiled into a book that should be available for sale the first week of August, as planned, with proceeds going toward the historical society.
Another fundraiser is the 2010 raffle quilt, currently on display at the museum. The top of the quilt was embroidered by the late Mae Bawks and donated to the historical society. Clara Hillock set the blocks and the Pickford Quilters spent many hours hand-quilting this item. Those interested in the raffle may buy tickets at the museum or from board members. The drawing will be Tuesday, August 10. Quilting on the 2011 quilt is already underway, starting with a top made and donated by Judy Nixon. In addition to the quilt raffle, the society holds weekly cash raffles each Friday throughout the year.
The society's museum on Main Street is open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day, every day except Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Patrons may stop in and browse at their leisure. Volunteers are available to answer any questions.
Membership, which includes regular newsletters about area history and current information on museum activities, is available and new members are always welcome.
