Elizabeth Ann Kelly
Elizabeth Ann Kelly died at her Bois Blanc Island home on July 14, 2010. She was the daughter of Lois Eleanor Maher and Herbert R. Slusser formerly of St. Paul, Minnesota. Elizabeth met Matthew John Kelly when they were both working in Glacier National Park in Montana. They were married for 52 years. Elizabeth was the beloved mother of four children, and cherished grandmother of nine.
In addition to her husband, Elizabeth is survived by her children and grandchildren, Michael J. Kelly and Dawn Boone and their sons Matthew, Rhys and Logan (Fort Collins, Colorado); Sarah E. Kelly and Brian Zuhse and their daughters Jacqueline and Nicole (Boca Raton, Florida); Margaret C. Horn and Timothy and their sons Tymon and Leo (Mackinac Island, Michigan); and Mark A. Kelly and Kimberly, daughter Alexandra and son Jordan (Carbondale, Illinois); one sister, Margaret Griess (Oak Ridge, Tennessee); one brother, Father Michael Stephen Slusser (St. Paul, Minnesota); two sisters’-in-law Shirley Slusser (Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Joyce Slusser (Pebble Beach, California). A brother-in-law Leo Kelly and his wife Alicia (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and sister-inlaw Carol Kelly (Decorah, Iowa) along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers, John Whitney Slusser (formerly of Midland, Michigan) and Richard Cowden Slusser (formerly of Pebble Beach, California).
Elizabeth was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, moving from there at the age of eight to St. Paul, Minnesota where she attended the Convent of the Visitation School and the College of St. Catherine, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. While raising her family, Elizabeth received her Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois University School of Law and then served as Director of its Law Library. In 1984, Elizabeth became Director of the Biddle Law Library at the University of Pennsylvania. She retired as Professor of Law and Director in 2001. During her professional life, Elizabeth belonged to and served many organizations and associations.
On Bois Blanc Island, Elizabeth was instrumental in the founding of the Bois Blanc Island Historical Society. Her love of family, nature and history was evident in and around her home on the Island and in Ora Valley Arizona.
A gathering of friends remembered Elizabeth on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at the “Red House” in the Pines, Bois Blanc Island, Michigan. Condolences may be sent to her family in care of Matthew Kelly, PO Box 946, Pointe Aux Pins, Michigan 49775.
