Ruby Jane Hamel, 73, of Cedarville, died Monday, July 19, 2010, in Cedarville.
She was born May 25, 1937, in Sault Ste. Marie to Albert George and Lucille Victoria (nee Lee) Waybrant.
She lived in Cedarville for most of her life. She was a graduate of Cedarville High School.
In 1954, she married Edwin Hamel and after a short time living in the Detroit area, they returned to Cedarville, where their family grew up. She worked at Trefry's Drug Store (currently Arfstrom's Pharmacy) in Cedarville. While working at the drug store, she attended Lake Superior State College and earned a certificate in bookkeeping. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority, retiring in 1992 because of failing health.
She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting and watching television.
She is survived by one daughter and her family, Lucinda Malkowski and Keith “Hawkeye” Izzard of Cedarville; two sons and their families, Gene and Brenda Hamel of DeWitt, Mike and Cathy Hamel of Cedarville; eight grandchildren and their families, Mark and Karen Malkowski, Matt and Jamie Malkowski, Michael Malkowski, Madisun Izzard, Ford Izzard, Alex Izzard, Brian Hamel and Jessica Vincent, and Amanda and Matt Gerding; 11 great-grandchildren, Marcus Malkowski, Hanna Malkowski, Sophia Malkowski, Milo Malkowski, Mya Malkowski, Maksyn Malkowski, Jaiden Hornung, Michaela Hornung, Nathan Hamel, Kyler Hamel, and Arianna Gerding. Also surviving are three sisters and their families, Alberta and Jim Beacom of Largo, Florida, Phyllis Wisner of St. Ignace, and Alice and Donald Honnila of Cedarville; one brother and his family, Gene and Connie Waybrant of Cedarville; a sister-in-law, Beverly Waybrant of St. Ignace; a brother-in-law, Anthony Hamel of Temple Garden, Illinois; many nieces and nephews; and a longtime friend, Mary Watson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Wayne Waybrant and Nyle Waybrant; and her former husband, Edwin Hamel.
An informal service was Sunday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at the home of Gene and Connie Waybrant in Cedarville.
Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
