Are Medical Marijuana Users Undesirable Residents?

To the Editor:

In your July 15 paper you had an article covering the city council of Mackinaw City’s difficult decision regarding medical marijuana dispensaries, one that I don't envy. The article quoted one council member as saying, "In my opinion, we're going to end up with a lot of people we don't want in our community." And if that statement wasn't inflammatory enough, another member agreed! This leaves me to question a few things. Is there some test prospective citizens have to pass before being allowed to rent, lease, or purchase a place of residence in Mackinaw City? Perhaps one would have to provide a hair, blood, or urine sample, or pass an FBI background check? Would these test be required of all applicants, or just the ones that some members find repugnant? And lastly, do all of the good citizens of Mackinaw City agree with these possibly slanderous statements? If not, may I suggest that you replace these members as soon as possible. There's no excuse for these type of prejudice, and uncompassionate points of view.
