Mary Caulfield
Mary Francis Kneip Caulfield, 73, of Drummond Island, worked as a surgical nurse for many years before retiring to her summer home on Drummond Island. She died Monday, August 9, 2010, at her home.
She was born May 22, 1937, in Traverse City, to Elmer and Gertrude (nee Steavens) Crampton.
She grew up on a farm on the Old Mission Peninsula, north of Traverse City. As a teenager, in addition to working on the farm, she taught Sunday school and worked as a nursing co-op student.
She was graduated from high school in 1955, and in 1956, she married Jon Kneip, a young man who worked on a neighboring farm. Their three children grew up in Sterling Heights, where she continued her nursing education. She completed her nursing degree in 1975, and worked as a surgical nurse for many years.
Following a divorce in 1983, she later married Robert Caulfield.
Mrs. Caulfield spent as much time as possible at her summer home on Drummond Island, and made it her permanent home when she retired.
She was an active person who had many interests. An avid outdoorswoman, Mrs. Caulfield enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, riding snowmobiles and ATVs, and gathering, cutting, and splitting firewood. She loved waterfalls. She also enjoyed knitting and sewing. She liked to play cards, and visited the casinos. Friends said she perfected a hard-to-predict bluff when playing poker.
Mrs. Caulfield is survived by her husband, Robert; one daughter and her family, Katherine Marie and Kenneth Jack Cornett of Greer, South Carolina; two sons and their families, Jon Pym Kneip, Jr. and Danial Alan Kneip, both of Drummond Island, and six grandchildren and their families, Gregory Alan Cornett, Michelle and Troy Cox, Bradley James Cornett, Emily Marie Cornett, Trisha Rose Kneip, and Travis Charles Kneip. Also surviving are two brothers and their families, Norman and Wanda Crampton of Traverse City and Merwin Crampton of Drummond Island.
Services will be Thursday, August 12, at 1 p.m. at the Drummond Island Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to time of the service. Burial will be in Drummond Island Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Drummond Island Lutheran Church, 29515 Channel Road, Drummond Island, Michigan 49726.
