Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Selects 2011 Class for Induction

The 23-member Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame (UPSHF) committee selected 10 athletes for the Class of 2011 at its annual meeting at Kewadin Shores Casino in St. Ignace Friday, July 30. The candidates, three from before 1960 and seven from after 1960, will be inducted at the Danforth Place in Escanaba Saturday, April 30, 2011.

New inductees are John Flanagan of Escanaba, William Denton (Dolly) Gray of Houghton, and Dave Freeman of Iron Mountain (pre-1960), Sara Boyer of Rapid River, Kris Bullock Dunbar and Scott Weaver of Sault Ste. Marie, Jeff Nault and Scott Hebert of Escanaba, Alan Kimichik of Norway, and Jan Quarless of Iron River (post-1960).

Officers for 2011 remain Cathy Shamion of Ontonagon as executive director, Rod Guizzetti of Negaunee as president, David Latva of St. Ignace as vice-president, Dennis Grall of Escanaba as executive secretary, and Steve Swanson of Ishpeming as treasurer.

Remaining members of committee are Duane Tirschel, Rex Terwilliger, and Mike Caruso of Iron Mountain, Fred Devuano and Bill Crawford of Sault Ste. Marie, Gene Maki and Nancy Osier of Wakefield, Karl Dickson of Escanaba, Bob Erkkila of Calumet, Dave Hallgren of Negaunee, Ted Kearly of Hancock, Dave Lahtinen of Gladstone, Jim Partanen of Bessemer, Frank Rodman of Hermansville, Craig Remsburg of Marquette, Bob Krysiak of Menominee, Larry Rubick of Newberry, and Seb Rubick of Manistique.

The meeting included a memorial tribute to charter member Art Allen of Manistique, who died in May.

The committee will hold its 2011 meeting at the Keweenaw Lodge in Copper Harbor Friday, July 29.
