Cedarville: Art in the Park

The 10th annual Music and Art in the Park festival in Cedarville Saturday, September 4, offers a chance for art lovers to see more than just the art on display, it is a chance for that art to come alive as artisans demonstrate how their pieces are made.

This one-day event, hosted by the Les Cheneaux Area Artisans Cooperative, is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cedarville Waterfront Park on Hodeck Street. An ideal location for the show, the park is downtown on the waterfront, with ice cream and pizza restaurants nearby, said organizer Randy Dunn.

In the past, artisans have demonstrated watercolor painting, spinning, pottery, and metalwork. Pickford resident Marty Feldhake will perform original folk music at this year's festival.

“There are a whole array of artists actually displaying their craft on site,” Mr. Dunn said. “It's a good chance for those attending the show to ask questions and interact with the artists.”

The cooperative organizes two art festivals throughout the summer, but the music and art in the park event offers a chance for oneon one attention.

“It's one of our smallest art shows, with approximately 15 vendors each year,” he said. “It is also one of the most intimate because the artists are more than happy to sit down and talk about their craft, sometimes as they are going through it.”

The two festivals the cooperative organizes each summer are Saturday's festival in Cedarville and Music and Art Dockside, held in Hessel July 18 this year.

The two shows are funded through members' sales, public donations, and a $10 annual co-op membership fee. The co-op collects 10% of artists' sales, up to $100, during each of the two shows.

New members are welcome to join the 30-member cooperative, and both visual and performing artists may join. Those wishing to join may write to P.O. Box 135 Cedarville, MI 49719, or call Kate Otstot at 484-2515.
