On Inadvertent Whistle
The Pellston Hornets held a 14- 0 lead after the first quarter before the Hale Eagles tied the score in the second half, but an inadvertent whistle led to a two point safety as Hornets quarterback Brian Jurek was tackled in the end zone and the visiting Eagles posted a 16-14 win Saturday, August 28. Even though the whistle was blown inadvertently, the ball was declared dead at the point of the whistle.
Brian Jurek scored the Hornets’ touchdowns on runs of five and 35 yards and Jake Sydow added the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.
Hale tied the score at 14 and, late in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were driving for the potential winning touchdown. Pellston intercepted the pass in the end zone and was returning the football, but an inadvertent whistle stopped the play at the one yard line.
The Hornets took possession 99 yards away from the goal before the Pellston running back was tackled in the end zone for the two-point safety, the deciding points.
"This was a tough defeat for this group of players who have worked hard during the preseason," said Hornets Coach Dave Brines.
