Les Cheneaux

Congratulations to Pat and Lawrence Lofdahl, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

The year, 1950, was a memorable year in many ways. That was the year that Con and I moved our little family to Cedarville from Grand Rapids in April of 1950, and what a change of lifestyle that was. It was also the same year that the Pickford bank suddenly closed its doors and our whole summer’s savings were locked up, along with those of many other families. The following winter was a struggle for many families, but all creditors were patient and understanding and we survived.

Linda and Stan Jack celebrated 34 years of marriage. Happy anniversary wishes to Steve and Sandy Tassier September 12.

We were sorry to learn of the death of another longtime resident last week with the passing of Melbourne Williams. Melbourne would have been 93 years of age September 5. He is related to some of the Williams in the area and many of the Izzards. An obituary for Mr. Williams is published in this issue.

The Les Cheneaux Arts Council presented a $1,000 scholarship to Noah Jacobus as he continues his graduate work in digital design, from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. From the Cedarville area, Mr. Jacobus was home schooled and was an active participant in the Cedarville High School band program during his high school years. He began his freshman year at Asbury University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he majored in music history. Currently, he is working at Arfstrom Pharmacy while finishing his graduate degree. He also has been doing some freelance work in digital design. He will finish his graduate degree by the end of September and plans to relocate to the Lexington, Kentucky, area, where he completed his undergraduate degree. The 4-H program was developed by an idea spearheaded by Bonnie Mikkelson, Betty Jones, and Mary Baker. The 10-week program was held at the Hessel Presbyterian Church for class instruction, which included the group planting gardens using the square foot gardening method. Weekly lesson topics included: plant science; soil; insects and the water cycle. In addition to the gardening instruction, participants completed several craft projects such as painting flower pots, decorating frogs for Frog Fest, and personalizing containers to hold harvested vegetables. Phase two of the program is now underway, which will include each of the participants completing 10 hours of volunteer time to complete the Junior Master Gardener Program.
