Newberry Veterans Memorial Will Honor McMillan Soldier

A “Lest They Be Forgotten” Memorial in Newberry will be dedicated Saturday, September 11, at 1 p.m. in front of the Newberry American Legion. The dedication also commemorates the death of a local soldier, McMillan resident Sergeant Jeremy DePottey, on the fourth anniversary of his loss while serving in Afghanistan. The public is invited to attend to show support for Sgt. DePottey’s family and all veterans.

On the same day, the Newberry Eagle Riders will host their second annual “Smokeout” with food and music. A memorial ride is planned. Riders are encouraged to ride to the dedication ceremony.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial Foundation’s goal is to build and dedicate a memorial in the hometown of every military member who lost their lives defending the United States of America in the war against terrorism. Currently, there are 26 memorials in Michigan honoring 36 fallen heroes. An effort is now underway to help obtain this memorial for Chippewa County’s fallen heroes, Christopher Griffin and Brandon Steffey, who both died while serving in October 2009.

More information, including the pictures, hometowns, branch, memorial sites, and biographies of Michigan’s fallen heroes, can be found online at www.michigansoldiers. com.
