Saints 2-0 After 31-0

Win Over Red Devils

The St. Ignace Saints move its season to a 2-0 record with a 31-0 non-conference win over the East Jordan Red Devils during parent’s night at Saints Field Thursday, September 2.

Despite a steady, 48-minute rain, the St. Ignace offense accumulated 380 yards, 303 on the ground and 77 passing, while its defense held the Red Devils to 87 offensive yards and accounted for three St. Ignace touchdowns.

"We had a balanced offense with our running attack and Cole Christiansen felt more comfortable at the quarterback position with his passing," said Saints Coach Marty Spencer. "This was another strong effort on the defensive side of the ball."

The defense opened the scoring as senior Grant Simmons blocked an East Jordan punt and John Eby picked off the ball in mid air and dashed 40 yards for the touchdown. The the junior also kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead at 7:40 of the first quarter.

The St. Ignace running game took control on the next scoring drive as the Saints marched 72 yards on nine plays with Austin St. Louis scoring on a one-yard run for a 13-0 lead.

On the first possession of the second half, Parker Simmons intercepted a Red Devils pass at the 31 yard line and, following a 28-yard pass completion from Christiansen to Curtis St. Louis, Austin St. Louis scored from two yards out for the Saints’ final touchdown.

Junior Jordan LaVigne rushed 214 yards and scored five touchdowns as the host Pickford Panthers blitzed the Bark River-Harris Broncos, 54-0, during a Mid- Eastern Football League (MEFL) match-up Friday, September 3.

The Panthers are 2-0 in the MEFL.

Pickford built a 26-0 lead after the first quarter when Jordan LaVigne scored four touchdowns on runs of 79, 31, 2, and 16 yards and Seth Gruenberg added one two-point conversion.

Pickford extended the advantage to 46-0 at halftime as Charlie Halsey scored on a 55 yard run, Jordan LaVigne answered from 35 yards out, Ryan McBryde dashed 75 yards, and Adam Taylor and Jacob Eddy coordinated the twopoint conversion pass.

Jared LaVigne closed out the scoring for Pickford with a one yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and Helsey completed the two-point conversion pass to Jordan LaVigne.

Pickford rushed for 424 yards on 41 carries for a 10.3 yard average and the Panthers defense held the Broncos to minus yards rushing and 52 passing yards.

Shorten Game At Frankfort

The Rudyard Bulldogs made the long trip to Frankfort and dropped the weather-shortened non-conference game to the Pickford Panthers, 22-0, Thursday, September 2.

"The weather was fine until the 11 minute mark of the fourth quarter and lightning sent both teams into the high school at 9 p.m.,” said Bulldogs Coach Pat Maloney, “and two hours later, the game was called off."

The contest between the Bulldogs and Panthers was physical and the big plays and little mistakes hurt Rudyard.

"We did not play well in the first half, but started to play much better in the third quarter before the game was stopped," said the coach.

The Cedarville Trojans and Stephenson Eagles non-league football game scheduled for Thursday, September 2, was cancelled owing to lightning and will not be rescheduled.

Contest To Cardinals

The Pellston Hornets dropped a road Ski Valley Conference game to Johannesburg Cardinals 36-0 Friday, September 3.

Hornets’ statistics: Brian Jurek, 20 carries for 66 yards, 12 tackles, Will King, 11 tackles, Travis Matthews and Josh VanTilburg, 10 tackles; Sam McMurry, nine tackles.

The Hornets will host Engadine during a non-league contest Friday, September 10.

Brimley Drops 8-Man Home

Contest To Superior Central

The Brimley Bays led 22-18 before the visitors from Superior Central scored 14 unanswered points and post a 32-22 victory Thursday, September 2.

The Cougars took a 6-0 lead before the Bays answered with two touchdowns as Dylan Graham scored on a 36 yard run and Dylan Schroeder passed 15 yards to Michael Kuenzer combined for a score and added the two-point conversion for a 14-6 advantage.

Superior Central took a 14-12 halftime lead and scored early in the third quarter to extend the margin to 18-14.

Schroeder scored from 19 yards out and notched the two-point conversion to give the Bays a 22-18 lead before the Cougars scored two touchdowns to ice the win.

Bays offensive statistics: Dylan Schroeder, 10 of 26 passing for 124 yards; Dylan Graham, 10 carries for 90 yards; Michael Kuenzer, four receptions for 59 yards.

The Bays will travel to Posen Friday, September 10.
