The St. Ignace offense was in high gear as the top-rated Saints defeated the Cedarville Trojans 81-32 in a non-conference home game Tuesday, January 17, and downed the Cheboygan Chiefs 66-32 during a Straits Area Conference contest on the road Friday, January 20.

“This is a very unselfish group of girls who play well together,” said Saints Coach Dorene Ingalls. “They work hard in practice and the effort pays off in the games.”

St. Ignace is ranked number one in the Class A-B-C Upper Peninsula poll and number two and four in two state-wide polls. The team has extended its overall winning streak to 36 and 35 in the league and stands 5-0 in SAC and 11-0 overall on the season.

Five players scored in double figures in the win over the Trojans.


Katie Keller, Pickford Katie Keller, Pickford St. Ignace opened the game with a 12-0 lead as Kelley Wright hit two triples, Emily Hinsman scored four, and Morgan LaVake chipped in two.

Cedarville cut the St. Ignace lead to 16-8 as Taylor Falkey scored four and Alexis Barr and Kharizma Labinski added two each before the Saints completed the first quarter outscoring the Trojans 23-1 for a 38-9 advantage.

The Saints outscored Cedarville 22-12 in the second quarter for a 60-21 halftime lead and closed out the running clock second half with a 21-11 advantage.

In the SAC win over Cheboygan, the Saints opened the game with a 20-12 lead after the first eight minutes and increased the lead to 46-15 with a 26-3 margin in the second quarter. The Saints outscored the Chiefs 20-17 in the second half.

Engadine Record at 8-2 with Pair of Victories


Nicole Bouwma, DeTour Nicole Bouwma, DeTour The Engadine Eagles improved their record to 8-2 on the season after posting non-conference wins over Big Bay de Noc, 65-19, at home Friday, January 20, and Mid Peninsula, 58-42, on the road Tuesday, January 17.

Krista Metcalf and Morgan Mac- Arthur contributed 43 points in the win over the Black Bears.

The Eagles led 18-3 after the first quarter and held a 39-6 halftime advantage, then outscored Big Bay de Noc 26- 13 in the second half.

Pickford Edges Cedarville

The Pickford Panthers made 16 of 30 free throws to down the Trojans 34-30 during an Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference road contest Friday, January 20.

The Panthers, 9-4 overall and 3- 1 in the league, trailed 10-7 after the first eight minutes before outscoring the Trojans 13-2 in the second quarter for a 20-12 halftime margin. Cedarville held a 18-14 scoring edge in the second half.

Panthers Down Indians

The Panthers connected on 28 of 42 from the free throw line that included 11 of 18 in the fourth quarter to down the Newberry Indians 53-46.

Defense Lifts Brimley in Win over DeTour

The Brimley defense lifted the Bays to a 51-21 Eastern Upper Peninsula road win over the DeTour Raiders Friday, January 20.

“This was the best defensive game we have played all season,” said Bays Coach Ray Bell. “We played with more intensity.”

The Bays are 9-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference. DeTour fell to 6- 5 overall and 1-3 in the EUPC.

Brimley opened the game with a 18-4 advantage in the first period and increased the lead to 30-7 at halftime with a 12-3 margin in the second quarter and outscored the Raiders 21-14 in the second half.

DeTour made only 10 of 54 basket attempts, an 18% success rate.

“We had our worst shooting game of the season,” said Raiders Coach James Geyer. “This has been very frustrating for everyone.”

Bays statistics: Whitney Frazier, 14 points, 10 rebounds; Anna Carrick, 10 points, eight rebounds; Sydney Beaune, seven points, six rebounds, five assists; Tabitha Graham, six points, six rebounds, five assists; Megan Parish, six points; Taylor Wilson, Tiffany Wilson, Taylor Mills, two points.

DeTour Downs Rudyard, Inland Lakes in Non-League Games

The DeTour Raiders defeated the Rudyard Bulldogs 54-43 Monday, January 16, and the Inland Lakes Bulldogs 49-42 Tuesday, January 10, during a pair of non-conference games.

“We lost Rachel Hoffman to an injury early in the game at Rudyard, but Julie Reed came off the bench and played very well,” said Raiders Coach James Geyer.

The game was tied at 22 at halftime but DeTour held a 36-35 scoring edge after the third quarter and outscored Rudyard 18-8 in the final eight minutes to post the win. De- Tour made 8 of 12 from the free throw line in the last quarter.

Raiders statistics: Nicole Bouwma, 23 points, 24 rebounds, four blocked shots; Sydnie Mickelson, 12 points; Jennifer Brady, seven points; Alyssa Anderson, four points, 10 assists, five steals; Julie Reed and Rachel Hoffman, four points.

Bulldogs statistics: Leah Jarvie, 19 points, Brittany Brown, seven points; Maria Harrison, six points; Mackenzie Gibson, five points; Hunter Perry, three points; Victoria Cusick, one point.

Against the Bulldogs, Sydnie Mickelson drained a 3-point fieldgoal to send the game into overtime tied at 40, then scored three points to add to Nicole Bouw- ma’s six to lift the Raiders to a seven point win.

The Raiders led 23-20 at halftime before Inland Lakes held a 20-17 advantage in the third quarter to send the game into overtime.

Mackinaw City Remains in First Place with NLC Win over Alba

The Mackinaw City Comets remain in first place in the Northern Lakes Conference with a 7-1 record after a 78-47 road win over the Alba Wildcats Wednesday, January 18. The Comets are 8-3 overall on the season.

The Comets led 21-10 after the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 44-19 at halftime with a 23-9 advantage in the second quarter. They outscored the Wildcats 34-28 in the second half.

Comets statistics: Courtney Wallis, 31 points, seven assists; Hailee Paquet, triple double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals; Claudia Alexander, 12 points, 10 rebounds; Cassie LaLonde, 12 points; Sarah Ragola, eight points, eight rebounds.

The Comets won the junior varsity game 51-20 to remain undefeated in the conference with a 8-0 record and improved to 9-2 overall.

Comets JV statistics: Blaine Yoder, 12 points; Lily Alexander, six points, 10 rebounds.
