The Mackinaw Mush sled dog race usually held in Mackinaw City the first weekend in February has been cancelled owing to mild weather and lack of snow. Event organizer Chuck Cullip of St. Ignace said the mush usually requires a solid base of about a foot of snow.

The last Mackinaw Mush was in 2009, the 20th year the race was run. The next year it was cancelled because of lack of snow. In 2011, the race was cancelled because of an unfinished state bike trail. Construction posts were blocking the trail heads leading to the parking area used for the race.
