Joe Ostman Three St. Ignace wrestlers, Joe Ostman, Galloway Thurston, and Richard Bentley, won individual championships to lead the Saints to a second place finish at the prestigious, 32-team Gaylord Northern Michigan Championships Saturday, January 28.

Ostman, 29-0 on the season, competed in the 215 pound weight class and finished the day with a 4- 0 record, Thurston, 36-2 overall in the 171 pound division, went 4-0, and Bentley, 33-6 on the year in the 125 pound weight class, was 4-0 for the day.

Lou Radecki (35-2, 152 pounds) placed second with a 3-1 showing, Billy Bentgen (28-10, 112 pounds) took fourth at 2-2, and Jesse Halberg (21-12, 135 pounds) finished eighth at 2-2.

“I was pleased with the effort by everyone and the team results,” said Saints Coach Harvey Bentley. “This is one of the strongest invitationals that we compete in all season.”

Remaining wrestlers include Jason Brown at 130, Joe Krause 145, Dylan Brown 160, and Wyatt Orm 189, and they completed the meet with 1-2 records.

Galloway Thurston Top Ten: Traverse City St. Francis

178.5, St. Ignace 126, Escanaba 110, Rogers City 97.5, Roscommon 93.5, Marquette 91.5, Iron Mountain 89, Gaylord 87, Gladstone 68, Alpena 67.5.

The Saints will host parents during a Straits Area Conference match Wednesday, February 1, and travel to Mio for the conference tournament Saturday, February 4.

Tournament Schedule: Team districts will be held Wednesday, February 8, with Rogers City, St. Ignace, Newberry, and Rudyard competing at Rogers City. Individual districts will be in Munising Saturday, February 11, with wrestlers from St. Ignace, Rogers City, Newberry, Munising, and Rudyard.

St. Ignace will host team regionals Wednesday, February 15, and Manton will host the individual regionals Saturday, February 18.
