William Hewer


William Hewer William Hewer William Austin Hewer, 87, of Pickford, was a World War II veteran who went on to a long career in the hardware industry. Mr. Hewer passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born to William Benfield and Sue Maude (nee Crawford) Hewer. He grew up in Stalwart.

Mr. Hewer served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He married Cleo Elizabeth Smale June 21, 1946, in Grand Rapids and they made their home in Pickford.

He worked for Taylor Lumber Company in Cedarville, and more recently at the Pickford Building Center, for a total of 65 years. He was honored at a “retirement” party at the age of 62 and then went back to work the next day.

Mr. Hewer was a member of American Legion Post 323 in Pickford and the VFW of Hessel.

He enjoyed his work, woodworking, and was a Detroit Red Wings fan.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cleo; two sons and their families, Richard and Diane Hewer of Manistee and Steven and Bonnie Hewer of Sault Ste. Marie; one granddaughter, Jessica Hewer; two sisters, Nona McCord of Stalwart and Lois Tassier of Cedarville; and two brothers and their families, Vern and Elsie Hewer of Traverse City and Pete Hewer of Sault Ste. Marie.

Visitation was Thursday, December 27, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford. A funeral was held Friday, December 28, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
