Pickford Boys Runner-up in Division 3, Josh Hester Breaks 37-year Record at U.P. Finals

The Pickford Panthers finished runner-up in the Division 3 boys Upper Peninsula track and field championships and Josh Hester of Cedarville broke a 37-year 800 record Saturday, June 1.

Pickford: The Panthers 1600 relay team of Jarred Lavigne, Justin Portice, Alec Firack, and Austin Brunning won in 3:42.01; the 3200 relay foursome of Jacob Andrzejak, Alec Firack, Justin Portice, and Austin Brunning placed third; Jarred Lavigne, second in the low and high hurdles; Jared Hatfield, third in long jump; Phillip Coullard, fourth in long jump, fifth in 200; Austin Brunning, fourth in 400, sixth in 800; Justin Portice, fifth in 800.

St. Ignace: Parker Simmons, second in 100 and 200; Richard Bentley, third in pole vault; James Cryderman, fourth in 100, sixth in 200; Joe Krause, fourth in low hurdles; Dane Mortensen, fifth in shot put; Joe Ostman, sixth in shot put; Brennan Danielson, sixth in low hurdles. Cedarville: Josh Hester set a new school record in the 800 with a first place time of 2:03.6 breaking the mark set by Gene Hamel in 1976 and the senior won the 1600 in 4:37.79; Teddy Bowlby, fifth in the 3200; Casey Vogel, sixth in the high hurdles.

Brimley: Jayson Aikens finished second in the 3200, third in the 1600 and the Bays 3200 relay team placed fifth.

DeTour: Sathya Wiltse finished fifth in the 100.

In Division 1 Marquette won the girls and Gladstone the boys and in Division 2 West Iron County finished first in the girls and Manistique first in the boys.
