He was parked at the corner of State and Fitch streets during the annual St. Ignace Car Show Saturday, June 29. Larry Draper’s 1972 Chevy Cheyenne has stayed in the family its whole life, and it is in its stock condition. Mr. Draper of Hart brought the vehicle to display at the St. Ignace Car Show Saturday, June 29.

“Everything on it is original except for the top,” he said. “The motor has never been out of it.

Benjamin Draper, Mr. Draper’s father, purchased the half-ton pickup new in Dallas, Texas, where he had relocated for work, in the early 1970s. He instilled a love of cars in his son, and when he passed away in 1980, Mr. Draper inherited the truck. As a result, he has fond memories with the vehicle, and it reminds him of his father.

“I got to drive this the first week he owned it,” Mr. Draper said. “My dad loved this truck just as much as I do.”

Both appreciating cars and maintaining them were hobbies he learned from his father.

“I just learned to love it,” Mr. Draper said. “He was a Chevy lover, and this was his favorite.”

The truck still drives well at more than 40 years old, and it is rust free, noted Mr. Draper. In 1987, he repainted it with the same forest green color and applied clear coat. Customized pin striping was also added later. The odometer shows 159,000 miles.

“It is a wonderful truck. It rides so nice,” he said, and “You hardly have to wax it.”

Now at 73, he is planning to sell the pickup, the last of his vintage vehicles that he has kept owing to his memories with it and its family connection.

“It’s time” to find an owner who will care for it as he has, Mr. Draper said.
