Eugene Crawford

Eugene Crawford Eugene Crawford Eugene B. Crawford, 80, of Sault Ste. Marie, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey.

He was born September 26, 1932, in Stalwart, to Robert Crawford and Ethel (nee Waybrant) Crawford.

He grew up in Stalwart and was graduated from Pickford High School.

He attended the Sault Ste. Marie Branch of Michigan Technological University for a year before entering the United States Coast Guard where he served for 31 years. He was stationed in Marquette, Cheboygan, and Grand Haven, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Alaska, California, Florida, Washington, and Vienam.

He married Glenda (nee Bryson) Crawford, November 30, 1981, in Tacoma, Washington.

Mr. Crawford worked for Tacoma Boat Building, Northrop Grumman, Logicom RDA, and Hudson’s Grocery. In 1997, he returned to Michigan and during the summer lived in Raber or Sault Ste. Marie and spent his winters in Placida, Florida.

He was a life member of VFW in Brimley, the American Legion in Sault Ste. Marie, and the Elks in Sault Ste. Marie. He loved gardening, bowling, golfing, fishing, ballroom dancing, and was an avid reader and sports fan. He was often seen walking his Basset hound “Fred” each morning and evening in Sault Ste. Marie.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda; his daughter and her family, Lorrie Denise Crawford and Dan Lewis, of Spanaway, Washington; his son and his family, Eugene Benton and Wanda Crawford Jr. of Gainesville, Florida; his stepson and his family, Stan and Karen Seago of Davenport, Illinois; grandchildren and their families, Cassandra and Sam Miller, Stephen and Shannon Lewis, Amanda and Ken Miller, and Kyle Crawford; step-grandchildren, Madison, Hanna, and Kameryn Seago; great-grandchildren, John and Gearon Miller, Stevo and Erik Lewis, and Palmer Crawford; two sisters and their families, Margaret “Peg” Zenda of Sault Ste. Marie and Judy and Ron Adams of Galesburg, Michigan; a brother and his wife, Ronald and Rose Crawford of San Antonio, Texas; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Bennett and Clifford Reuben Waybrant, and a sister-inlaw, Hazel Crawford.

He is preceded in death by sisters and their families, Anne Bennett, Ethel Berniece Waybrant, Evelyn and Eldon Debro, and Kathleen and Howard Parrish; a brother, Harry Crawford, and a brother-in-law, Ben Zenda.

Services will be Friday, July 19, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a memorial service directly following.
