Mackinac Island

The weather has been unseasonably cool, but folks continue to visit our beautiful Island. The flowers are absolutely outstanding, especially the black-eyed Susans at Mission Point Resort. The hydrangeas in every shade are absolutely huge.

We extend deepest sympathy to the family of Joan Gallagher, who passed away Saturday, July 27. Joan, the daughter of the late Elmer and Alberta Gallagher, grew up on Mackinac Island and attended the Thomas W. Ferry School. May she rest in peace.

Great news! Mike Bradley is back on Mackinac Island and settled in his home. He is recovering well after major surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Friends may remember Mike with a card as he continues his recovery.

We send get-well wishes to Ruby Bloswick of St. Ignace, who recently suffered a bad fall. She is a patient at Mackinac Straits Health System. Friends may remember her with a card.

Jane Winston, niece of the late Mary Cable, departed Mackinac Island Tuesday, August 6, for her winter home in Georgia.

Happy birthday to Jordan James Fisher, who celebrated his fourth birthday August 13. Hope you had loads of fun with your family and friends on your special day.

Best wishes to Frank and Joan Nephew, who will celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary August 14. Enjoy your day.

A nice reception was held at the Mackinac Island Public Library Friday, August 2, honoring the Mackinac Seven artists. Their artwork will be on display for the month of August, so stop by and view all the beautiful artwork.

I am happy to report that Dr. Fran Straus is making a very good recovery from his recent illness. He thoroughly enjoys being on Mackinac Island and the wonderful view from his Pontiac Lookout cottage.

Karen and Gary Lennard recently attended the 91st birthday gathering for Karen’s father, Sharon Hudson, in Ohio.

Paul Wandrie, post commander, and the Chapman-St. Onge- Dankowski American Legion Post 299 hosted the national commander of the American Legion from Indiana, the Michigan commander, and several other dignitaries Monday, August 5. They toured Mackinac Island, especially enjoying the Veterans Memorial. They thoroughly enjoyed Mackinac Island and were impressed with the work of the members of the American Legion.

The Jim Bogan family and the Carl Doolen family are enjoying their cottages at British Landing.

Congratulations to Todd Callewaert, who made a hole in one at Wawashkamo Golf Course Thursday, August 1.

Bill and Erica Chambers, along with their two daughters, Charlotte and Shannon, of Virginia, are visiting family and friends on Mackinac Island.

Gloria Mondelli of New Jersey is vacationing on Mackinac Island and is staying at the Sugar Shack on French Lane. It’s nice to see you back on Mackinac, Gloria.

Becki Splett, along with her mother and nephew of Bloomer, Wisconsin, recently spent three days at the Windermere Hotel. Happy birthday to Becki August 11. Hope you had a wonderful day.

Anneke and Matt Myers recently entertained Anneke’s family, including her mother, Grace Armour, her sister, Marion, and her two daughters, and her brother, Art Armour, and his family. Her brother, David, and his family were not able to attend. They had a great gathering with lots of great food, especially Grace’s cinnamon bread, many laughs, and loads of fun.

Patrick Culliton, grandson of Brian and Barbara Hellis, is visiting Mackinac Island for several days.

Nancy Chambers LaBorde and her husband, Jean, of Crivitz, Wisconsin, recently visited family members on Mackinac Island.

The tall ship Barquentine Peacemaker visited the Island Sunday, August 4. She was built in 1989, in Brazil, by an Italian family of shipbuilders. She is a beautiful ship and a very impressive sight in the harbor.

Jay and Janet Stingel and Dan and Jamie Dickens will depart Fort Lauderdale, Florida, January 4 aboard a Holland American cruise ship for a sail around the world. They will return to the Florida port in April.

Happy birthday to Melinda Porter and Pollyanna Redman August 15, Almeda Bodwin and Larry Rickley, Jr. August 16, and Austin Ruddle and Stella Graham August 18. Hope you all enjoy your day.
