Robert ‘Bob’ Heilman

Robert Heilman Robert Heilman Robert K. “Bob” Heilman, 89, of Mackinaw City, was a World War II veteran and a Mackinaw City businessman. Mr. Heilman passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016, at Tendercare in Cheboygan.

He was born April 22, 1927, to Karl and Ethel (nee Ayotte) Heilman in Macon.

Mr. Heilman enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 during World War II, serving with the Seabees. He was honorably discharged in 1948. Upon his discharge, he returned home to Cheboygan and, at the age of 28, purchased a frozen food business that he operated until 1966, when he opened the Fort Fudge shop in Mackinaw City. Mr. Heilman retired in 2015.

He married June Coffman February 21, 1992, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Mr. Heilman was very civic minded, and his efforts to serve and promote Mackinaw City were without limits. He was a longtime member of the Mackinaw City Lions Club, American Legion in Mackinaw City, and VFW. He was a lifetime member of the Pellston Masonic Lodge. He served four years on both the Community Memorial Hospital board and the Mackinaw City Village Council, as well as the Cheboygan Golf and Country Club and Cheboygan Rotary Club. Mr. Heilman was the first promoter and principal fundraiser of the Fort Michilimackinac

Pageant in Mackinaw City. He was instrumental in raising money to get a library in Mackinaw City. His influence and devotion to Mackinaw City will be long remembered. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and Michigan State University Spartans fan. He enjoyed reading and traveling the world with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, June; two sons and their families, Robert R. Heilman and Charles and Kathy Heilman, all of Mackinaw City; a stepson and his family, Jon and Kelly Darrow of Brighton; three grandchildren, Andrea, Kristina, and Stephen, and two step-grandchildren, Jack and Katherine.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Heilman was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Heilman.

A memorial service was held Sunday, October 2, at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City with Pastor Dave Wallis officiating.

Burial with full military honors took place at Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mackinaw City Lions Club, Hospice of the Straits, or the Church of the Straits.

Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan assisted the family with arrangements.
