Trojans Runners Are U.P. Champs

The Cedarville Trojans cross country team won the MHSAA Division 3 state champion Saturday, October 22, at the Upper Peninsula state finals in Gladstone. (Photograph courtesy of Kirsten Bohn) The Cedarville Trojans girls cross country team won the Division 3 Upper Peninsula State Championship Saturday, October 22, in Gladstone, placing four runners in the top 10 of the title race. It was a good day for Eastern Upper Peninsula runners as Brimley’s Austin Plotkin won the Boys Division 3 championship race for the Bays.

Chassell’s Lela Rautiola won the Division 3 girls individual race with a time of 20:12.2, with Cedarville’s Emma Bohn leading home the Trojans with a runner-up finish in a time of 20:27.2. Teammate Caroline Freel came across the line 32.9 seconds later in sixth place with Lily Freel finishing eighth and Cassidy Barr 10th. Leila Schlosser finished 18th as Cedarville placed five runners in the top20. Its total of 34 points gave it the state title ahead of Chassell’s 46 points and Dollar Bay’s 81. Racers from Brimley and Engadine also took part in the race. The Bays’ Lauren Halvorsen finished 17th with teammate Kendra Carrick taking 20th. Abigail Germain was the Eagles top finisher in 25th.

Austin Plotkin won the individual boys championship for the Bays in Division 3 as he finished his race in a time of a 17:02.0, finishing more than 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Brendan LeClaire of Dollar Bay. Plotkin led a strong Brimley contingent that placed four runners in the top-20 with Danny Anderson in 13th, Marcus Harris in 15th, and Nathan Recla in 20th. Chassell won the state title with a score of 54 points and Brimley placed second with 77 points. The Cedarville boys finished the event in fourth as a team with Engadine sixth, and Pickford 10th. Thomas Bohn finished fourth for the Trojans in 17:38.5 with his teammate Avry Freel taking eighth. Michael Satchell was the Panthers top runner in seventh place, while Dalton Zdebski finished 19th for the Eagles.

The Division 2 girls competition saw the St. Ignace Saints finish fourth behind Ishpeming, Munising, and Hancock. Newberry was fifth and Rudyard eighth. Munising’s Alyssa Webber won the race with her teammate Madeleine Peramaki finishing second. Callie Kammers finished sixth to top St. Ignace’s chart with Rosy Shimkovitz coming across the line about 18 seconds later in eighth place. Emily Berkompas finished 14th as the top runner for Rudyard.

The Division 2 boys championship was also won by the Ishpeming Hematites after their runners Grady Kerst and Spencer Giroux finished

1-2 in the championship race. Newberry finished third in the team competition with Kindred Griffis finishing third overall for the Indians. Rudyard finished seventh in the team competition with Payton Cheney as its highest-finishing runner in 15th place.

Cedarville won with a score of 34 points, followed by Chassell, 46, Dollar Bay, 81, Rock Mid-Peninsula, 88, and Stephenson, 90.

Engadine: Abigail Germain, 25th in 23:30.8; Camille Crandall, 36th in 24:29.1; Annika Hollinger, 39th in 24:42.3; Alyssa Feneley, 54th in 30:52.1.

Chassell won with a score of 54 points followed by Brimley, 77, Stephenson, 81, Cedarville, 126, Powers North Central, 149, Engadine, 165, Republic-Michigamme, 176, Carney-Nadeau, 201, Painesdale Jeffers, 203, Pickford, 204, and Rock Mid-Peninsula, 216.
