Constance ‘Connie’ Smith


Constance Smith Constance Smith Constance “Connie” Smith, 78, of St. Ignace, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Evergreen Living Center in St. Ignace, surrounded by her family, following a long illness.

She was born October 17, 1938, to David and Margaret (nee Perrault) LaPine on Mackinac Island.

She attended the Indian Dormitory School on Mackinac Island.

Mrs. Smith worked for hotels on Mackinac Island and in housekeeping in St. Ignace.

She was an elder with the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

She loved her family. Mrs. Smith enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed visiting the casino.

She is survived by three sons and their families, Lester Arseneau of Ringgold, Georgia, Lloyd Arseneau of Monroe, and Brian Smith of Kinross; two daughters and their families, Debbie and Bob St. Andrew of Moran and Denise and Jeff Singleton of Monroe; nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five brothers and their families, Richard and Doris LaPine of St. Ignace, David LaPine of Petoskey, Bruce and Patty LaPine of Mackinac Island, and Larry LaPine and Gary LaPine, both of St. Ignace, and two sisters and their families, Terry Beaune of Pickford and Patricia and Jim Satterly of St. Ignace.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Smith, and a son, Lawrence Arseneau.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 19, at 1 p.m. at the Sault Tribe Elder Center, the former McCann Street School, on McCann Street in St. Ignace.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace is assisting the family with arrangements.
