Mackinaw City Boys Basketball Tops Alanson

The Mackinaw City boys basketball team scored its first victory of the 2016-17 season Thursday, December 8, when it toppled Alanson 68-59 in its Northern Lakes Conference opener. The game was played on the road with the hosting Vikings holding a narrow 16- 15 edge at the end of the first quarter before the Comets (1-1, 1- 0) pulled ahead 34-27 at the half. Mackinaw City again outscored Alanson 21-15 in the third quarter to build up a lead that would hold despite the Vikings outscoring them 17-13 in the fourth.

“This was a scrappy battle right from the opening possession,” Mackinaw City Coach John Martin said. “Alanson played at its own pace and applied pressure. We handled it like it was our second game of the year and the turnovers that were created turned into easy looks on the other end. I was very pleased with our off-theball players tonight…It has been a long time since Mackinaw boys have left that gym with a win, so that was a step in the right direction.”

Logan Smith recorded a doubledouble for the Comets as he scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Mr. Martin said that Jarred Hartman was strong attacking the basket, while Robert Martin controlled and distributed the ball well.

Comets Statistics: Kash O’Brien, 20 points; Logan Smith, 18 points, 11 rebounds; Michael Elliott, 13 points; Jarred Hartman, nine points; Robert Martin, eight points.
