Engadine Eagles Girls Claim Two Victories in a Row Against Bays, Rockets

The Engadine girls basketball team won two games in a row recently as it bested Brimley on the road Thursday, December 8, 73-46 then came home to defeat Rapid River 69-37 Monday, December 12. The Eagles outscored their opponents in every quarter of both games.

The road game against Brimley was a close one at the start. Engadine held a narrow 16-14 lead after the first quarter and moved ahead 32-26 at halftime. The Eagles blew the game open by outscoring the Bays 21-8 in the third quarter, then pulled away by holding a 20-12 edge in the fourth.

“We played a good game tonight. Everyone knew and played their role well,” Engadine Coach Roger French said. “I think Brimley and our front court are a good match-up with each other… We still have a lot of things we need to work on, but it feels good to get that first conference win.”

Mr. French complimented the Bays, noting the hosting girls shot well out of the gate and throughout the first half.

Aubrey Simmons had a great night for the Eagles as she recorded a double-double with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Teammate Olivia Vaughn also had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds as Mickaela Deace scored 10 points after coming off the bench. Allison Margherio played well at point.

The Eagles struck fast in their game against Rapid River, opening up with an 11-0 run before leading the Rockets 15-5 after the first quarter. The lead grew to 37-14 at halftime. Engadine outscored their rivals 16-9 in the third and 16-14 in the fourth.

“I was really pleased with our team effort tonight,” Mr. French said. “We passed well, having 15 team assists, and played good weak side defense.”

Mr. French felt his team ran the floor well. Aubrey Simmons performed well in the post, posting a 22-point, 15-rebound double-double, while her teammates Olivia Vaughn and Sophia Vaughn also turned in strong performances.
