Paul ‘Pete’ Merchberger


Paul Merchberger Paul Merchberger Paul “Pete” Regis Merchberger, Jr., 77, of Barbeau, died Thursday, December 22, 2016, at home.

He was born November 19, 1939, to Paul and Agnes (nee Bedard) Merchberger in Pontiac.

Mr. Merchberger grew up in Royal Oak, where he was graduated from Shrine High School. He joined the United States Marines, where he served for several years.

He married Maebelle Taschner September 7, 1963.

Mr. Merchberger worked in small engine sales for his father. In the early 1970s, he began driving truck. He and his wife moved their family to the Upper Peninsula in 1975, and he began driving truck for Graham Trucking. He continued trucking with his own truck, retiring in 2011. He enjoyed listening to National Public Radio while on the road.

He was a member of the St. Marys River Sportsmen’s Club, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and American Legion Post 3 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mr. Merchberger was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding anything that could go fast, especially snowmobiles and four-wheelers. He had fun spending time with his friends at the Cozy Corners Tavern and Grill.

He is survived by two sons and their families, Eric Merchberger of Barbeau and Roger and Maggie Merchberger of Sault Ste. Marie; a daughter, Cheryl Merchberger, also of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren, Samantha and William Pratt, Karl Merchberger, Brian Merchberger, Adam Merchberger, Thomas M. Merchberger, and Victoria Merchberger, and three great-grandchildren, Maraya, Kaiden, and Zoey. He is also survived by two sisters and their families, Barbara Nelson of North Carolina and Mary and Richard Starkweather of Neebish Island; two brothers and their families, Robert and Linda Merchberger of Goodrich and Mark and Elizabeth Merchberger of Cedarville, and his former daughter in-law, Rebecca Miller.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Merchberger was preceded in death by his wife, Maebelle; a sister, Agnes “Betsy” DesRosiers, and four brothers-in-law, Bill Nelson, Frank Taschner, John Taschner, and Robert Taschner.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 5, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services will be Friday, January 6, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Brother John Hascall officiating.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.
