By Stephen King

Grace May Grace May Grace May, a junior at Maplewood Baptist Academy, topped the list of All Conference volleyball players compiled by the coaches of the Northern Lights League. Cheyla Shunk and Ella Cowell of Mackinac Island were named to the second team. The league is a group of very small schools that have their own league, which includes Mackinac Island, Beaver Island, Ojibwa, Munising Baptist, Maplewood Baptist, and Hannahville.

For the Black Bears, May did most of her work as an outside hitter, and was also a setter and receiver. Over the season, said her coach, she kept improving.

Coach Amber Bailey said, “Grace has been a very consistent hitter and server all season. Also, not only did her skills improve, but her leadership qualities on the court were far beyond expectations. Her hard work, consistency, and positive attitude, along with her confidence on the court, are what earned her this award. She also plays varsity basketball and is involved in the ministries at the Fundamental Baptist Church. It will be exciting to see what her senior year holds for her.”

“I was excited to receive the Player of the Year Award,” said May. “My team really worked hard all year. I am already looking forward to next season.”
