One of the windows on the lower floor has already been boarded up in relation to the construction. Mackinac Straits Health System plans to establish a new retail pharmacy at the hospital in St. Ignace that will offer weekend and evening hours for prescription medications. Construction is now underway with an expected opening in May.

The Straits Area Pharmacy is the result of two Community Health Needs Assessments in 2013 and 2016 that identified a need for more retail pharmacy services in the community, said hospital CEO and President Rod Nelson. The pharmacy will be inside the hospital building, near the emergency room entrance, with its own external door and also a drive-up service.

“Our desire is to provide more convenient access for our patients’ prescription needs leading to improved quality outcomes for our patients and improved pharmacy service for the residents of Evergreen Living Center,” he said. “This also addresses one of the four priorities identified in the federally mandated Community Health Needs Assessment.”

It will provide a needed health service here, Mr. Nelson said, and help be a new source of revenue for the community hospital.

He also pointed out that area residents do not have a local pharmacy option on weekends unless they drive at least 30 miles. The hospital intends to operate the store seven days a week with evening hours, and more limited hours on the weekends.

The 1,675-square-foot pharmacy will offer prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and other supplies such as bandages, skin lotions, and disinfectants. Pharmacy hours will be announced in the spring.

The hospital will renovate ground-level space at the southeast side of the hospital, near the emergency room. A drive-through canopy with a medication pickup lane will be located on the same side of the building as the ambulance entry. Four parking spaces will be constructed in front of the pharmacy next to the sidewalk leading to the exterior pharmacy door.

The hospital has worked with Munson Healthcare consultants on the project.
